Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany has given his support to the "new chapter" in Aston Villa captain Stiliyan Petrov's life.
The Bulgarian announced his decision to retire from professional football today following a 14-month battle with acute leukaemia, which is now in remission.
"I wish Stiliyan Petrov all the best for this new chapter in his life," Kompany wrote on Twitter. "It's sad to see a great captain and a great man retiring in his prime."
The 33-year-old has revealed that he intends to set up a new foundation to help those suffering with the disease.
