The Football Association have confirmed that they will appeal Wayne Rooney's international suspension.
The striker was handed a three-match ban after he recieved a red card against Montenegro in England's Euro 2012 qualifier last month.
The length of the suspension means that Rooney would miss all of England's Euro 2012 group stage matches.
The FA will contest the severity of the ban with UEFA, not the red card.
If the appeal is successful, Rooney could have his ban reduced. However, the 26-year-old suspension could be extended if the appeal fails.
It is reported that the FA will withdraw the appeal if they think that the ban could be furthered.
