Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has insisted that he has full confidence in Wayne Rooney finding his best form this campaign.
The England international has endured a slow start to the Premier League season, having failed to hit the target in his first two outings.
Rooney has been fielded in a more advanced role once again this term, coming after many accused Van Gaal of playing his captain out of position, and the Dutchman has backed Rooney to deliver the goals.
"All the media has written for one year that I have to put him in the striker's position, so it's amazing that after two games you are doubting your own opinions," he told reporters. "I cannot understand that. I have always confidence in my players."
Rooney had just one touch of the ball inside Aston Villa's penalty area in United's 1-0 victory last Friday.
