Alan Shearer: 'Premier League needs to improve this year'

The Premier League should be a "bigger and better" league this season, according to former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer.

Premier League all-time top goalscorer Alan Shearer has revealed that he thought last season's campaign lacked excitement.

Chelsea led for the vast majority of the season as they eased to their fourth Premier League crown, and the ex-Newcastle United striker hopes that this year provides more competition.

He is quoted as saying by The Mirror: "I hope it's a better league than last season's because I didn't think that standard wise, excitement wise, I didn't think it was the best of Premier League seasons that we've had.

"I'm expecting bigger and better this year. Chelsea won at a canter last season, certainly from February onwards because there weren't any serious contenders with them."

Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur kick off the new season on Saturday.
