The 28-year-old has found himself surplus to requirements at St Mary's this season behind Rickie Lambert and Jay Rodriguez in the pecking order up front.
Barnard spent time on loan at Bournemouth earlier in the season, when he made 16 appearances scoring four goals.
The Latics are currently 19th in League One just one point clear of the relegation zone.
