Adam Johnson has confirmed that he will play no part in Sunderland's fourth-round FA Cup replay away at Fulham this evening.
The former England international has undergone minor surgery on a thumb complaint and he will not feature at Craven Cottage to decrease the risk of infection.
"Unfortunately I won't be there. I'm getting an operation on my thumb. I'll be missing this one," he told the Sunderland Journal.
"I just have to get it done, it's not a serious thing, but I need the wound to heel. It's the risk of infection that's keeping me out."
It has been speculated that the 27-year-old could return to action in time for Saturday's Premier League clash against Swansea City.
