Report: Pepe Mel no longer in running for West Bromwich Albion job

Former Real Betis manager Pepe Mel is reportedly out of the running for the West Bromwich Albion managerial vacancy.

Talks between West Bromwich Albion and Pepe Mel over the managerial vacancy at The Hawthorns have reportedly broken down.

The former Real Betis coach was believed to be on a shortlist of candidates for the role, but Sky Sports News reports that the Spaniard is no longer in the running for the job.

A statement from the club today said: "This is a confidential process and it is inevitable there will be speculation about who may be under consideration.

"We are now progressing through the interview and short-listing stage. We plan to make an appointment at the earliest opportunity but our primary concern is recruiting the most suitable individual.

"We are grateful for the professional manner in which [caretaker] Keith Downing, the coaching staff and the players have approached the last two games. Keith remains in charge for tomorrow's game at West Ham United and until an appointment has been made."

West Brom parted company with Steve Clarke earlier this month.
