Maria Sharapova beats Ekaterina Makarova 6-2 6-3 to face Petra Kvitova in the semi-finals of the Australian Open.

Maria Sharapova eased into the semi-finals of the Australian Open after beating Ekaterina Makarova 6-2 6-3.

The 2008 champion started brightly and broke her fellow Russian twice in the early stages.

Sharapova's serve looked a much-improved weapon as she wrapped up the first set with little trouble.

Makarova did improve in the second set but despite breaking the fourth seed, her service games were inconsistent throughout the match.

Sharapova broke twice more before serving out the match to set up a semi-final clash with Petra Kvitova.
