Barcelona have confirmed that defender Carles Puyol underwent knee surgery earlier this week.
The 34-year-old is now likely to miss both legs of the club's Champions League quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain.
"Carles Puyol underwent an arthroscopy on Thursday evening in order to clean up his right knee," said a club statement.
"Puyol's return will be determined by the progress of his recovery."
Barcelona visit PSG for the first leg of their last-eight tie on April 2, with the return match being held at Camp Nou eight days later.
