Gerard Pique wants Barcelona captaincy

Gerard Pique reveals plans to don the Barcelona armband regularly at some point in the future.

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has thrown his name into the hat to succeed Andres Iniesta as captain one day.

Pique, 28, helped the Catalans to Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League glory last season for his and the club's second treble in six years.

The centre-back, who started 46 games in all competitions, reveals that he is champing for extra responsibility, and says that wearing the armband at some point would satisfy that ambition.

"Although I am not captain, I play an important role in the team," he told reporters.

"Whether I become captain or not in the future, I will continue to play an important role in the team.

"I would like to be captain in the future but it isn't something I lose sleep over. Right now, I don't approach it but if given the chance, we'll see."

Pique re-joined the Blaugrana - with whom he began his career - in 2008 following a spell with Manchester United.
