Karl-Heinz Rummenigge: 'Bastian Schweinsteiger is not past his best'

Rummenigge defends Schweinsteiger

Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has dismissed suggestions that midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger is past his prime.

Former Germany international Olaf Thon claimed this week that the 28-year-old is in decline as he has lost his pace.

"Perhaps Thon is a bit frustrated that he no longer plays a role in football," Rummenigge told TZ. "That's why he's making comments like this on television.

"He would probably have liked to play at the same level as Bastian. We are very pleased with Schweinsteiger's performances.

"A quick look at the international careers of Thon and Schweinsteiger says it all, and speaks in Basti's favour. End of the discussion."

Thon played for Bayern between 1988 and 1994.
