England manager Roy Hodgson is non-committal over Rio Ferdinand's England future.

England manager Roy Hodgson is unsure whether Rio Ferdinand will ever represent the national team again.

The Manchester United defender spurned the opportunity to feature in the Three Lions squad for the World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Montenegro to focus on his match fitness.

However, it has since emerged that Ferdinand has agreed to serve as a TV pundit for Al Jazeera on both England matches.

In his final press conference ahead of the San Marino clash, Hodgson remained non-committal when quizzed on the player's England future.

"I think we should just wait and see, I think it's more a question of how his injury situation will impact upon him playing for England, so we'll have to wait and see what happens in the future," he told reporters.

"At the moment it's speculation about a longer-term future whereas my focus is on these next two games, which are important for us in our bid to qualify. I am happy with the squad we've got."

Ferdinand had been recalled to the Three Lions setup for the first time since 2011 but withdrew citing "detailed pre-planned training and medical programme" as the reason for his absence.
