Sports Mole's countdown of the top 25 Liverpool players in Premier League history continues with number 16 - John Arne Riise.

Liverpool have had no shortage of thunderous strikers of the ball throughout their history, from Jimmy Case through to Steven Gerrard, but rarely has any shot threatened to uproot the Anfield goal like John Arne Riise's unstoppable free kick against Manchester United in 2001.

It was some way to announce the Riise rocket to Liverpool fans in his first season at the club, and that left foot would go on to hurt plenty of teams when the Norwegian international got forward down the wing.

Riise joined Liverpool in 2001 and immediately became part of Gerard Houllier's first-team plans, missing just one Premier League game during his first two campaigns at the club.

The full-back went on to make 339 appearances for Liverpool, including 234 in the Premier League, scoring 30 goals in that time - the majority of which were his trademark long-range strikes.

Riise was most notably part of Liverpool's 2005 Champions League-winning team, providing the assist for Gerrard's header which sparked the comeback in Istanbul, although he did go on to miss his penalty in the shootout.

The fan favourite went some way to atoning for that by scoring in the shootout to help Liverpool to 2006 FA Cup glory, though, and he ended his Liverpool career with seven trophies to his name - including the League Cup in 2003.
