One look at Martin Skrtel upon his arrival at Liverpool in January 2008 suggested that Rafael Benitez had signed an uncompromising centre-back, and over the next eight-and-a-half years he certainly did not disappoint.
The Slovakia international helped Liverpool to second place in the Premier League in both the 2008-09 and 2013-14 campaigns, while also lifting the League Cup with the club in 2012 - scoring in the final against Cardiff City.
Despite facing criticism at times throughout his Anfield career, Skrtel made 319 appearances for the club across all competitions and scored 18 goals in that time - 16 of which came in 242 Premier League outings.
Skrtel's performances in the 2011-12 campaign, when Liverpool reached two cup finals under Kenny Dalglish, saw him named the club's player of the year for that season and he stayed at Anfield until 2016, when he left for Fenerbahce.
