Tom Cleverley: Danny Welbeck "will score loads" for Arsenal

Tom Cleverley says that he was not surprised to see Danny Welbeck score a hat-trick for Arsenal on Wednesday night.

Tom Cleverley has backed his former Manchester United teammate Danny Welbeck to "score loads" of goals for Arsenal.

Both players left the Red Devils at the end of the summer transfer window, with Welbeck securing a £16m switch to the Gunners, while Cleverley sealed a season-long loan switch to Aston Villa.

Welbeck has since gone on to score four times for the North Londoners - a haul which includes a hat-trick against Galatasaray on Wednesday evening.

Following that clash, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger conceded that he was shocked by just how good Welbeck was, but Cleverley has insisted that the 23-year-old's performance came as little surprise to him.

"I always knew he would do [well]. He's a great player and a great lad. Wenger's comments that he didn't realise how technically good he is and how quick he is – I don't think people do until you actually work with him," Cleverley told The Independent.

"He's technically very good. Great players in teams that create that many chances will always score goals. I think he will score loads."

It is expected that like Welbeck, Cleverley will leave United permanently either in January or next summer.
