Wayne Rooney: 'Manchester United can win silverware next season'

Manchester United skipper Wayne Rooney insists that the club can compete for silverware again next season having achieved their goal of a top-four finish this term.

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney believes that the club can push for silverware once again next season.

The Red Devils suffered an anomaly of a campaign in 2013-14, finishing in seventh place in their first Premier League season without Sir Alex Ferguson at the helm.

However, under Louis van Gaal they have returned to the Champions League places at the first time of asking, and Rooney is confident that they can continue their progress next term.

"Our main objective was to get back into the Champions League and we've done that," the England skipper told reporters at the club's awards ceremony.

"We've got the quality to push on next season and I believe we can go on and win silverware. It was very important. If you look at Liverpool what happened to them they were without it for years – which was no shame."

United realistically need Arsenal to lose their final two games of the season to stand any chance of finishing in the top three of the Premier League table.
