Gary Neville has backed Wayne Rooney to win over the Manchester United fans following his latest transfer saga.
Rooney has been linked with an Old Trafford exit ever since Sir Alex Ferguson revealed that he asked to leave the club towards the end of last season.
Rooney went through a similar situation in 2010 before committing his future to the Red Devils, and former United defender Neville believes the England striker can win back the fans again.
"The fans have been through the before many times," Neville told Sky Sports.
"It will unfold in the next few weeks but I genuinely think the fans will be fine with him. He's been too good a player - a great player - for Manchester United and the fans will accept that.
"I very rarely see, in fact I've not seen in 26 years, a Manchester United player treated harshly by Manchester United fans, particularly the ones that have served them well and did their all. Wayne can certainly put himself into that category."
Rooney is currently on his way back from United's pre-season tour of Thailand, having picked up a hamstring injury.
