Newcastle United to re-sign Shola Ameobi?

Newcastle United weigh up a move to re-sign free agent and their former youth product Shola Ameobi in the winter transfer window.

Newcastle United caretaker boss John Carver is reportedly keen to re-sign former Magpies striker Shola Ameobi this month.

The 33-year-old ended a 14-year spell at St James' Park to join Gaziantep in the summer, but he has recently left the Turkish side for personal reasons.

With Ameobi a free agent and top scorer Papiss Cisse expected to miss the next month through Africa Cup of Nations duty, Carver is hoping to convince Newcastle to sign off on a short-term deal for the forward, according to the Daily Star.

Former United boss Alan Pardew, who left Tyneside earlier this month, is also said to be interested in luring Ameobi to Crystal Palace, while Blackpool manager Lee Clark - who played alongside the Nigeria international - will also join the race.

He netted 79 times in almost 400 appearances for the North-East side, whom he initially joined as a 14-year-old back in 1995.
