Stuart Lancaster: 'England can win Rugby World Cup'

Stuart Lancaster says that the England team believe they can win the Rugby World Cup.

Stuart Lancaster has said that the England team believe they can win the Rugby World Cup.

England will play Fiji, Wales, Australia and Uruguay in Group A, with the top two teams progressing to the knockout rounds.

"The weight of expectation you have to turn into a positive and it's down to me as head coach to not put that weight onto the players too much. It's about encouraging them to experience the time of their lives, being positive about the rugby they play," Lancaster told reporters.

"It's about maximising home advantage, a once-in-a-lifetime experience to play in a World Cup at home in England. The energy the crowd can give the team is huge – and it makes things doubly difficult for the opposition.

"We had a meeting on Sunday night trying to articulate the belief that we can win this tournament. Not in an arrogant way but in a positive way. Why would we come all this way and not believe we can win it?"

Lancaster has named an unchanged team for their opener against Fiji on Friday.
