Petra Kvitova will miss at least three months of action after undergoing surgery on wounds suffered during a knife attack at her home.
The two-time Wimbledon champion sustained injuries to her left hand - her dominant hand when playing tennis - during an attempted burglary in the Czech Republic on Tuesday morning.
The 26-year-old, who said that she is "fortunate to be alive" after the attack, underwent surgery on the injury earlier today which a spokesperson has confirmed "went well".
"The injury is serious, but the surgeon says Petra is young and healthy and there is no reason why she can't resume tennis," added publicist Karel Tejkal.
"It was a random crime, nobody was going to attack or rob her as Petra Kvitova."
Kvitova will now wear a cast for six to eight weeks and will be unable to bear weight on her injured hand for at least three months, ruling her out of the Australian Open in January.
