Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas has revealed that he will not attempt to lure Luka Modric to Stamford Bridge from Tottenham in the January transfer window.
The former Premier League champions, who were linked to the Spurs playmaker all summer, reportedly tabled a £40m bid in the remaining hours of the transfer window in a last-ditch attempt to secure the midfielder.
When asked by reporters whether the Blues will come in with a fresh bid for the 25-year-old in January, Villas-Boas replied: "No I don't think so. The market is closed and I won't speculate what happens in January."
The former Porto boss also confirmed that talks between his old club for Alvaro Pereira broke down.
"We were very far from meeting Porto's demands for Alvaro,” he added. “I am happy with Ashley Cole and Ryan Bertrand."
Meanwhile, Chelsea are preparing for a trip to the Stadium of Light to face Sunderland in the Premier League this Saturday.
