Ian Wright praises Jermain Defoe and Danny Welbeck

Ian Wright says that Jermain Defoe and Danny Welbeck were the only positives to take from England's draw with Ukraine at Wembley.

Former England striker Ian Wright has hailed the performances of forward duo Jermain Defoe and Danny Welbeck in the draw with Ukraine.

Having gone a goal down, a Frank Lampard penalty drew the hosts level late on in the game before Steven Gerrard was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Defoe had an opener harshly disallowed for offside while Welbeck was impressive when brought on in the second half, and the Arsenal legend feels that the pair are the only positives the Three Lions can take from the game.

"Jermain Defoe worked hard and his disallowed goal should have stood while Danny Welbeck posed a threat when he came on but, other than that, we were poor," Wright told The Sun.

"Gerrard played well in the first half but the Three Lions skipper faded after the break and Frank Lampard was closed down.

"Big things were expected of Tom Cleverley after his classy display against Moldova but he failed to live up to his billing."

England remain unbeaten in their current World Cup qualifying campaign.
