Former Fulham, Crystal Palace defender Brede Hangeland retires from football

Former Fulham and Crystal Palace defender Brede Hangeland announces his retirement from football.

Former Fulham and Crystal Palace defender Brede Hangeland has retired from football.

The 35-year-old, who was released by Palace at the end of last season, announced his decision on Sky Sports News this morning.

Hangeland made 26 appearances during a two-year spell at Selhurst Park following his transfer from Fulham in 2014.

The defender was bought by Fulham manager Roy Hodgson in 2008 and went on to make 272 appearances, 16 of which were during the Cottagers' route to the Europa League final in 2010.

Today, Hangeland revealed that the "aches and pains" of playing have prompted him to walk away from the sport.

"I thought long and hard about the future and decided it's time to end it," said Hangeland. "You can choose to be sad that it's over or be happy that it's happened. I feel so fortunate, I couldn't have dreamed of all the experiences and lessons.

"I think it's important to know when the time is right to finish. With the aches and pains - I'm 35 years old and I feel like I can't do the job I want to do anymore, so it's time to move on."

The Norwegian added that he is considering moving into media work.
