Stanislas Wawrinka proves too strong for Dominic Thiem

Stanislas Wawrinka will take on Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals of the Italian Open, having overcome Dominic Thiem at the third-round stage.

Stanislas Wawrinka has defeated Dominic Thiem 7-6(3) 6-4 to reach the last-eight stage of the Italian Open.

The opening set went the way of serve as both players stood strong, but it was the eighth seed who prevailed 7-3 in the tie-break to take a vital lead.

Wawrinka held throughout the second set, also, with the only break of serve coming in the fifth game as he saw out the job to progress through.

The Swiss will now face Rafael Nadal in the next round, with a place in the semi-finals up for grabs.
