Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez has rejected suggestions that the unpunished tackle by Callum McManaman is similar to that of the bite on Branislav Ivanovic by Luis Suarez.
The Liverpool striker was dealt a 10-match ban by the Football Association for biting the arm of the Chelsea defender during Sunday's 2-2 draw at Anfield.
Earlier this season, McManaman escaped any retrospective action from the governing body for a dangerous tackle on Newcastle United's Massadio Haidara's knee, which required hospital treatment.
"There is a big difference between something that happens when you have behaviour that is a normal part of the game," Martinez said in a press conference.
"You are trying to win the ball, hit it and then follow through. That is very different to having unsporting behaviour with violent conduct."
Liverpool have until midday tomorrow to appeal the lengthy ban on their striker.
