Brendan Rodgers: 'Steven Gerrard is the city of Liverpool'

Brendan Rodgers believes that Steven Gerrard has done more for the city of Liverpool than some of its politicians.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers believes that Steven Gerrard has done more for the Merseyside city than even its politicians.

The 34-year-old, who is a boyhood Reds fan, is just two games away from calling an end to his 17-year career with Liverpool.

The midfielder will play in his final game at Anfield this Saturday when he leads the side out as captain against Crystal Palace.

During Rodgers's press conference this morning, the Northern Irishman paid tribute to his skipper and reflected on what the footballer has done for the city.

"I asked members of staff if they could describe Steven in one word, what word would that be - it's Liverpool," Rodgers told reporters. "Not just Liverpool as a football club but Liverpool the supporters and Liverpool the city.

"This is a guy who is very much about the city, about his people. He loves the city. He's had a number of opportunities to move away from here to prestigious clubs but this is his club. He grew up around the corner.

"When it comes to what he's given the city, politicians haven't given the same amount to the city. It's incredible really. He's a wonderful symbol for the people here and is an icon of the club."

Gerrard will move to the United States in July to play for MLS side Los Angeles Galaxy on an 18-month deal.
