Liverpool may reportedly receive a boost in the transfer market with a club said to be ready to make a £13.4m for an out-of-favour defender.

Liverpool may soon be in a position to recoup £13.4m for an out-of-favour defender, according to a report.

The Merseyside giants have overseen somewhat of a quiet summer transfer window thus far, only seeing several experienced players depart on free transfers.

There is also an urgency to resolve the futures of three key players in Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, all of whom have less than a year remaining on their contracts.

Newly-appointed head coach Arne Slot and the club's recruitment team will naturally be assessing their options and ready to make additions, particularly in the centre of defence.

However, it seems that they could be able to generate a sizeable fee for a player who spent the last campaign away from Anfield.

Van den Berg attracting interest

According to Eindhovens Dagblad, Liverpool will soon be receiving a proposal from PSV Eindhoven for Sepp van den Berg.

Since signing for Liverpool in 2019, Van den Berg has been provided with just three starts and one substitute outing, all of which have come in the FA Cup or EFL Cup.

The defender's development has been spent elsewhere, loan stints occurring at Championship side Preston North End and German duo Schalke 04 and Mainz 05.

As well as the period with Preston, it is the 22-year-old's time at Mainz which has proven to be notably beneficial, with 33 appearances being made in the Bundesliga.

Van den Berg played a key role in the middle of the backline, concluding the campaign by starring in a 3-0 win over Borussia Dortmund and 3-1 success at Wolfsburg.

With two years remaining on his contract, Liverpool must now decide what to do with a player who will count as homegrown given that he signed for the club prior to his 18th birthday.

What should Liverpool do?

The homegrown situation is something which Slot must take into consideration, yet the youngsters promoted by predecessor Jurgen Klopp has given the Dutchman plenty of options.

As a result, and with Van den Berg seemingly preferring to move elsewhere, Liverpool are expected to jump at the opportunity to cash in on Van den Berg and make a huge profit.

PSV Eindhoven can offer the former Netherlands Under-21 international regular first-team football, although it is added the Eredivisie champions are currently £4m shortly of Liverpool's valuation.
