Peterborough United are reportedly set to receive a significant windfall from Brentford's sale of Ivan Toney to Saudi Pro League club Al-Ahli on transfer deadline day.

Toney returned to action in January after serving an eight-month ban for breaching the Football Association's betting rules.

Following his return, the 28-year-old contributed to England's European Championship run to the final, setting up Harry Kane's winner in the 2-1 win over Slovakia and netting a penalty in the shoot-out against Switzerland.

Upon returning from the Euros, Toney made clear that he was looking for a move away from the Gtech Community Stadium this summer and was linked with several big clubs in the Premier League, including the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea.

However, none of those teams were able to agree a deal for the Bees' talisman, which left the door open for Al-Ahli to make a late swoop to sign him.

Peterborough cash in on Toney sale

The Saudi Pro League outfit tabled a £40m offer to Brentford which they accepted and Toney completed his move to the Middle East in the final hours of the transfer window.

Although both Brentford and Toney have benefited significantly from the deal, Peterborough United have also gained a substantial sum from the transfer.

talkSPORT report that the League One side is expected to receive at least £4m from Toney's sale to Al Ahli, thanks to a sell-on clause the Posh included in the arrangement that brought the striker to Brentford in the summer of 2020.

Of the estimated £4m that Peterborough earns, it is understood that Newcastle United are entitled to 30% as part of their arrangement that took the England international to London Road from St James' Park in 2018.

Toney penned a four-year deal with Al-Ahli and is believed to be set to receive in the region of £16m per year in wages, having previously earned around £1m at Brentford.

Peterborough make two signings on deadline day

While Toney's transfer dealings were progressing ahead of the transfer deadline, Peterborough managed to get two deals over the line themselves on Friday.

The Posh secured the signature of Colchester striker Bradley Ihionvien on a three-year contract and agreed a second season-long loan spell for Jadel Katongo from Manchester City.

Katongo was a key player for Peterborough last season, making 43 appearances, including in their EFL Trophy victory over Wycombe Wanderers at Wembley.

Additionally, the club extended Donay O'Brien-Brady's contract by a further three years, while academy graduate James Dornelly was handed a new four-year deal.
