Great Britain's Jan Choinski advanced to the second round of the Estoril Open with an absorbing three-set win over Brazil's Joao Fonseca in the last 32.
The 27-year-old did not drop a set in his two qualifying matches en route to the first round of the ATP 250 tournament, reaching the main draw of a top-level competition for the first time in 2024.
Despite being broken while serving for the win in the second set before going down in a tense tie-breaker, Choinski kept his composure to prevail 6-2 6-7[5] 6-4 in two hours and 25 minutes.
After falling 2-1 down in the opening exchanges, Choinski reeled off a five-game winning streak to ease into a 1-0 lead and would seemingly cruise to victory as Fonseca double-faulted to lose serve in the second set.
However, the Brazilian wild card miraculously broke back to 4-5 while Choinski was serving for the match, despite wasting six chances to do so before converting his seventh, and Choinski could not recover from losing the first four points in the tie-breaker.
The world number 188 - who sits exactly 100 places higher than Fonseca in the rankings - did not lose his nerve, though, breaking to love in the seventh game of the third set and earning his first ATP Tour win of 2024 with a love hold.
The 27-year-old saved 11 of the 13 break points Fonseca fashioned on the day and has been rewarded with a rematch against second seed Hubert Hurkacz, who beat the Briton in straight sets during the second round of last year's Wimbledon Championships.
