Bolton Wanderers end winless streak by surprising Hull City

Stephen Dobbie scores the only goal as relegated Bolton Wanderers end their 14-match winless run against Hull City in their final home match of the season.

Relegated Championship side Bolton Wanderers ended their 14-match winless run this afternoon by surprising promotion hopefuls Hull City at the Macron Stadium.

It was a slow start to the match, but after 15 minutes of little action Hull striker Chuba Akpom spurned three chances in as many minutes before Bolton wasted an opportunity of their own.

Mark Davies went on a surging run and cut back for Darren Pratley, who shot too close to Eldin Jakupovic before Zach Clough's attempt from the rebound was blocked by Hull debutant Brian Lenihan.

That was Bolton's only real moment of note in the opening period as Akpom headed wide and Robert Snodgrass clipped the crossbar with Hull's two other chances before the break.

The second period was much more open than the first, with both sides having efforts cleared off the line by defenders before Akpom rattled the bar with a fierce attempt.

Moments later the only goal of the game arrived in the 65th minute as Stephen Dobbie swept home at the back post after Lawrie Wilson's cross went all the way through to the substitute.

The remainder of the match went by with little goalmouth action as Bolton defended stoutly to give the supporters something to cheer in their final home game of the season.

Hull miss out on the chance to all but secure fourth place for the playoffs, but they will have another chance to do that next week.
