Novak Djokovic has got his Rome Masters campaign off to a bright start by securing a place in the third round of the competition with a 6-2 6-3 victory over Albert Montanes.
The world number one suffered an early stumble in the opening set when he was broken by his Spanish opponent, but he soon found his feet and executed a number of powerful forehands and swift returns across the court to break back.
It wasn't long before the top seed snatched a one-set lead in Italy and carried that dominance into the early exchanges of the second set.
Djokovic broke his opponent instantly and managed to hold to take a 3-0 lead in the second set. His trademark athleticism came into play, while Montanes struggled to answer the Serbian's shots.
Despite putting three games on the board, the Spaniard was unable to cause Djokovic any serious damage as he booked a place in the next phase of the competition.
