Ajax title hopes suffer blow with Vitesse defeat

Ajax's Eredivisie title hopes suffer a blow with a 1-0 defeat to Vitesse as Uros Djurdjevic skilful late winner secures the hosts an unlikely win in Arnhem.

Ajax's Eredivisie title hopes have been dealt a huge blow with a 1-0 defeat away to Vitesse this afternoon.

Uros Djurdjevic's majestic winner late on was enough for Vitesse to deservedly take the three points.

The home side enjoyed the lion's share of the chances, but neither team were able to find the breakthrough in the first period.

Bertrand Traore perhaps had Vitesse's best chance, but his weak effort never really trouble Jasper Cillenssen in the Ajax goal.

Denys Oliynyk spurned a great chance for Vitesse shortly after the restart when he headed over the bar from close range.

Anwar El Ghazi finally mustered Ajax's first shot on target with around 15 minutes remaining, but his effort was comfortably saved as Frank de Boer's side continued to struggle to create anything of note.

With around five minutes remaining, substitute Djurdjevic netted with the winner with a skilful effort, taking a cross on his chest before flicking the ball past a defender and rifling a half-volley past Cillenssen.

The win leaves PSV Eindhoven with a nine-point lead at the top of the table.
