Liverpool are reportedly closing in on the signing of Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema for a fee of £38.8m.
The 26-year-old, who was extensively linked with a move to Anfield during the summer, is said to be Brendan Rodgers's top transfer target ahead of the reopening of the transfer window in January.
Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has publicly backed Benzema on numerous occasions of late in an apparent sign to keep to Frenchman happy.
However, a report in The Metro claims that Liverpool have opened talks with the Spanish giants over a potential deal, with Madrid already said to be looking for a replacement forward.
Benzema spared his side's blushes last night with a 77th-minute winner against minnows Ludogrets Razgrad in the Champions League, taking his tally up to three goals in eight games so far this season.
