Mark Warburton: 'Rangers can qualify for Europe this season'

Mark Warburton says that Rangers can qualify for European competition by winning the Scottish Cup this season.

Mark Warburton has said that Rangers can qualify for the Europa League by winning the Scottish Cup this season.

The Scottish Championship leaders have won all five league games and look likely to return to the top flight for the 2016-17 season.

"We are in a good position so why would we go into any game not expecting to do well?," Warburton told the Daily Record. "If you come off the back of four defeats and a couple of draws against a top Premier League team you might not feel so sure about yourself.

"But right now we are in a good place. The players have worked hard and deserve to be where they are now. The carrot of European football is what attracted some of these players to the club. The likes of James Tavernier, I have no doubts where he could play.

"It's the same with Rob Kiernan, Martyn Waghorn and Andy
Halliday – all the players. They could go down south and earn their money. But they're playing here with the carrot that's here. They want to experience European nights at Ibrox."

Rangers last competed in Europe in the 2011-12 season, when they lost a Champions League qualifier to Swedish club Malmo and a Europa League qualifier to Slovenian outfit Maribor.
