Report: Real Madrid join John Stones race

A report claims that Real Madrid will battle Barcelona and Chelsea for Everton defender John Stones next summer.

Real Madrid have joined Barcelona and Chelsea in the race to sign Everton's English centre-back John Stones, according to a report.

Both Barcelona and Chelsea are believed to be preparing bids in excess of £40m for the 21-year-old, who has impressed at the heart of Everton's defence this term.

It is understood that Stones's current club will resist offers this month, but are coming to the realisation that it will be difficult to keep him next summer, especially if the defender performs to a high standard at Euro 2016, should he be selected by Roy Hodgson.

According to the Daily Mail, Rafael Benitez told the Real Madrid board to sign the youngster during his time at the Bernabeu, and Benitez's departure has not dampened the Spanish club's interest.

Stones has made 76 appearances for Everton since joining the Toffees from Barnsley for £3m in January 2013.
