Saul Niguez: 'Criticism of David de Gea not helpful'

Spain midfielder Saul Niguez comes to the defence of international teammate David de Gea amid criticism of the goalkeeper.

Spain midfielder Saul Niguez has leapt to the defence of international teammate David de Gea, claiming that the recent criticism of the Manchester United goalkeeper is not good for the team.

De Gea has once again been in fine form for United this season, but the stopper struggled to produce his best form at the 2018 World Cup and has conceded six times in his last two appearances for La Roja.

The 28-year-old faces competition from Chelsea's Kepa Arrizabalaga for the number one spot with Spain, but Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul has paid tribute to De Gea's quality ahead of Sunday's friendly with Bosnia-Herzegovina.

"When you put so much criticism on a player, it affects us all," Saul told reporters. "Even if we say, 'No, it is not good for anyone that De Gea receives criticism, they should not be like that'.

"He is one of the best in the world. There may be times when you decide good or bad and for me it is unfair that you blame De Gea.

"I do not think he lacks confidence, he shows a tremendous personality, but what is generated, that negative energy, is not good for anyone. It would be best to change energy and talk about other things. If David concedes goals, I do not think it's just his fault, but everyone's, we all have to pay more attention."

De Gea is yet to sign a new contract with United as the speculation surrounding his future continues.
