The 22-year-old got off to the worst possible start by losing serve in the very first game but rallied round to take the set as he broke his opponent's serve twice.
Garcia-Lopez fared better in the second set but Thiem held his nerve to push further ahead as the 32-year-old Spaniard lost serve once again.
The final set saw both competitors lose serve twice as it went to tie-break, but Thiem came out on top once again to clinch the match and qualify for the third round.
