England's Phil Jagielka: 'Competition for places for Euro 2016 will be tough'

England defender Phil Jagielka believes that there will be a fierce battle for places to get into Roy Hodgson's 23-man squad for Euro 2016.

Phil Jagielka has admitted that there will be intense competition for places to get into the England squad for Euro 2016.

The 33-year-old captained the Three Lions in their final qualifying match as they defeated Lithuania 3-0 to ensure Roy Hodgson's men finished their campaign with a 100% record in Group E.

Jagielka believes that there will be a battle to make it into the 23-man squad for the tournament in France due to the performances of the younger players in the campaign.

He told Sky Sports News: "It is probably going to be difficult to whittle it down to the final squad. There are still a lot of games between now and France, obviously in the Premier League and the internationals as well.

"There is a really good competition for places, it is a nice headache for the manager to have but we need to keep this confidence going, keep progressing.

"We've got some tough friendlies coming up, perform well in them and hopefully keep the confidence up for when we fly out to France."

England are next in action against Spain on November 13.
