James McCarthy confirms operation on broken leg was successful

Everton and Republic of Ireland midfielder James McCarthy confirms that surgery on his broken leg has been successful.

Everton midfielder James McCarthy has announced that surgery on his broken leg has been successful.

The 27-year-old fractured both the tibia and fibula in his right leg as he tackled West Bromwich Albion forward Salomon Rondon during Saturday's 1-1 draw at Goodison Park.

Rondon was left in tears on the pitch after seeing the extent of McCarthy's injury and later admitted that he was "absolutely devastated".

The Republic of Ireland international is out for the season following the freak incident but confirmed on Instagram that the operation went well.

McCarthy posted an image of himself smiling in bed with the caption: "Just a quick message to say that my operation went well, thanks to all the staff involved!

"And a big thanks to all my family, friends and Olivia. Also cheers for all the messages, I appreciate it."

McCarthy had only returned from an injury layoff at the end of December and was playing just his third Premier League game of the season.
