Castleford Tigers into Challenge Cup semi-finals

Castleford Tigers advance into the semi-finals of the Challenge Cup with a 16-4 victory over Wigan Warriors.

Castleford Tigers have advanced into the semi-finals of the Challenge Cup following a 16-4 victory over Wigan Warriors at the DW Stadium this afternoon.

The Warriors had won the last four Cup meetings between the two sides, with Castleford's last win as far back as the 1986 quarter-final at Central Park.

A fairly untidy first period saw both teams take a while to make their mark, but Castleford moved 4-0 ahead after 31 minutes when James Clare converted a try.

That quickly became 6-0 following a goal from Marc Sneyd, with the Warriors frustrated by their inability to break through a stern Castleford outfit.

Wigan dominated possession in the early stages of the second period, but Castleford's defence continued to impress as the score remained at 6-0 with 20 minutes remaining.

Wigan finally got on the board after 63 minutes when Liam Farrell converted a try, but Matty Smith could not convert from the resulting kick, with Castleford still leading 6-4.

Castleford moved 10-4 ahead after 70 minutes when Kirk Dixon converted a try, but Sneyd could not register his second goal of the game moments later.

The Tigers made sure of the victory in the latter stages, however, when Lee Jewitt converted a try, before Sneyd added his second goal of the match on his third attempt.
