Southampton manager Nigel Adkins expects the club to be "very active" during the final week of the transfer window.
The Saints have already added Jay Rodriguez, Nathaniel Clyne and opening-day scorer Steven Davis to their squad this summer.
However, with next Friday's 11.00pm deadline fast approaching, Adkins is keen to bring more new faces to St Mary's, with a particular focus on strengthening his defensive options.
"I'd like to think we are going to be very active in the window because I know how hard people working behind the scenes here at Southampton," said Adkins.
"We want to improve and it is fair to say that now the transfer window is coming a bit of closer [to ending], more decisions are made.
"I have gone public saying we need to bring in another centre-half, if not two, so we'll see what the week brings."
The South Coast club have been linked with moves for Bologna winger Gaston Ramirez and Blackpool star Matt Phillips.
