Southampton midfielder Jack Cork is racing to be fit for the Premier League campaign after suffering an ankle injury in pre-season.
The 23-year-old, who competed at the London Olympics as part of Team GB, suffered the blow during Tuesday's friendly 1-1 draw with Bristol City.
The midfielder could be out of contention for the Saints' clash with Premier League champions Manchester City on August 18, which will mark their return to the top flight.
Meanwhile, Southampton manager Nigel Adkins believes that the South Coast club can compete at the highest level.
